Course Overview

Course Description. This course is an elective for EWM majors and explores how the publishing business transformed over the past two centuries from a trade to an industry, from individual printing houses and bookshops to multinational multimedia conglomerates. We will examine how the industrial then computer revolutions produced rapid technological changes, how the publishing business in different regions evolved over time, some of the issues facing the book trade, and finally the contemporary publishing culture. By the end of the semester we will have a solid grasp of the modern publishing landscape and how we got here.
